The Slits – Cut | 2019 LP, 40th Anniversary Edition, 180g (New, Sealed)

Cut is the debut album by The Slits, the London punk band fronted by Ari Up with Viv Albertine on guitar and Tessa Pollitt on bass. Released by Island in September 1979 and produced by reggae producer and bassist Dennis Bovell, it took the energy of punk somewhere looser and far stranger than most of their peers.

Bovell gave the songs a spacious, bass-heavy dub framework, and the band filled it with scratchy guitar, unconventional rhythms (Budgie, later of Siouxsie and the Banshees, plays drums) and Ari Up's playful, yelping vocals. Typical Girls, Shoplifting, Instant Hit and New Town mix sharp observations with humour, and the record is now seen as a landmark of post-punk.
