About this record
About this record
Ready To Die is the debut album from The Notorious B.I.G., released in September 1994 on Sean Combs' then-new Bad Boy label. Biggie's storytelling moves from the bleak street narratives of Things Done Changed and Everyday Struggle to the radio-friendly swagger of Juicy and Big Poppa, all delivered with an unhurried flow, dark humour and a sharp eye for detail.
The production balances hard, sample-based boom bap from producers including Easy Mo Bee and DJ Premier with smoother soul and R&B flavours on the singles. Framed by a birth scene in the Intro and the stark Suicidal Thoughts near the end, the album plays as a loose life story, and it became one of the cornerstones of 1990s East Coast hip hop.
