About this record

Madvillainy is the only studio album by Madvillain, the duo of rapper MF DOOM and producer Madlib, released by Stones Throw in March 2004. Made largely away from the mainstream and spread by word of mouth, it has become one of the most celebrated albums in underground hip hop.

Madlib's beats are built from dusty, unexpected samples, jazz loops and B-movie dialogue, cut into short fragments that rarely settle into conventional verse-chorus songs. DOOM fills them with dense, playful wordplay and a deadpan villain persona on tracks such as Accordion, Meat Grinder, Figaro, All Caps and Rhinestone Cowboy, with 22 tracks passing in well under an hour.
