About this record
Hejira, released in November 1976 on Asylum, is Joni Mitchell's eighth studio album, written largely during long solo drives across America. The songs move like the highways that inspired them, built on her open-tuned electric guitar and, on several tracks, the fluid fretless bass of Jaco Pastorius, with spare support from players including Larry Carlton.
Musically it blends folk, jazz and rock into something loose and conversational. Coyote and Amelia, the latter inspired by the aviator Amelia Earhart, set long, reflective lyrics over hypnotic grooves, while Song For Sharon and Refuge Of The Roads unfold slowly over several minutes. It is widely regarded as one of the high points of her 1970s run.
