D'Angelo – Voodoo | 2015 US 2LP, 180g (New, Sealed)

Voodoo is D'Angelo's second album, released in January 2000 on Virgin, five years after his debut Brown Sugar. It was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York, largely through long, loose sessions with Questlove on drums, Pino Palladino on bass and James Poyser on keys, part of the circle of musicians known as the Soulquarians. The album went to number one on the Billboard 200 and won the Grammy for Best R&B Album.

The sound is deep, unhurried neo soul with strong funk roots: drums that sit just behind the beat, warm round bass, stacked falsetto harmonies and touches of jazz horn. Devil's Pie and Left & Right lean towards hip hop, Feel Like Makin' Love reworks the Roberta Flack classic, and Untitled (How Does It Feel) builds slowly into one of the great soul ballads of its time. It is a record that rewards patient listening on a good system.
