Why This Record Matters
Carole King had already written hits for other artists, including 'Will You Love Me Tomorrow' with Gerry Goffin, before recording Tapestry in January 1971 at A&M Studios in Hollywood with producer Lou Adler. Released on Ode in February 1971, it features 'It's Too Late', 'I Feel the Earth Move', 'So Far Away' and 'You've Got a Friend'. It won four Grammys in 1972, including Album of the Year, and spent 15 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It is certified 14 times Platinum in the US, and its intimate singer-songwriter style set a template.
