About this record

Master Of Reality is Black Sabbath's third album, released in July 1971 and produced by Rodger Bain. Coming barely a year after Paranoid, it found Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward pushing their sound lower, slower and heavier than before.

Iommi tuned his guitar down for much of the record, which gives riffs such as Sweet Leaf, Children Of The Grave and Into The Void a thick, crushing weight that later doom metal and stoner rock bands would build on. The heaviness is broken up by the short acoustic instrumentals Embryo and Orchid and the mellow ballad Solitude, making a compact eight-track album that still sounds enormous.
