Released by Island in September 1979 and produced by reggae producer and bassist Dennis Bovell, it took the energy of punk somewhere looser and far stranger than most of their peers.

Bovell gave the songs a spacious, bass-heavy dub framework, and the band filled it with scratchy guitar, unconventional rhythms (Budgie, later of Siouxsie and the Banshees, plays drums) and Ari Up's playful, yelping vocals. Typical Girls, Shoplifting, Instant Hit and New Town mix sharp observations with humour, and the record is now seen as a landmark of post-punk.

About this edition

This listing is for the 2019 Island Records 40th anniversary LP reissue, catalogue number 7734143, barcode 602577341434.
